The Sun and Shadows

13 December 2012

Summer Holiday Library Programme

Two outreach programmes held at the Wynberg and Bothasig Libraries for the month of December. The total number of children reached were 57. The focus of the outreach was on the sun and activities related to shadows. Children attending the programmes varied in age, starting from 2 to 15 years old. Many of the children were joined by their parents for this holiday programme.

The outreach was divided into 3 segments and was for an hour. Children learnt basic facts about the sun and seasons, listened to the African cultural story The Crocodile Who Swallows The Sun and answered questions. Lastly the children engaged in 2 hands on activities working in pairs.

The children had to think about their shadows in relation to the position the sun. All of the activities were linked to the above statement. The children worked in pairs. During the outside activity the children had to identify the position of the shadow in relation to the position of the sun. Thereafter they drew their shadows. The next activity focused on the length of the shadows according to the time of the day. The children positioned their torches at different angles and drew the shadows of the objects. This enabled them to identify the time of the day when their shadows are the longest and the shortest.

The programme was well received by the children, librarians, and parents.
