UNAWE currently has 40 member countries and comprises a global network of about 400 astronomers, teachers and other educators. Each member country has a national programme, which coordinates its EU-UNAWE activities and acts as a point of contact for people to find out what is happening in their local area.

UNAWE is a bottom-up programme, in which each national node develops projects that are tailored to the needs of their own country. Meanwhile, the international network provides a platform for the exchange of ideas, methods and materials. The international network is also an important asset in raising support for the programme.
